What if equanimity was never the goal?
Or: What happens when we stop trying to be Buddha at all cost.
Let’s start with a belief that’s been sold as spiritual maturity:
“Stay calm no matter what. Don’t react. Stay neutral. Stay balanced.”
Sounds noble, doesn’t it? Almost enlightened.
Except, what if it’s actually a trap?
The myth of spiritual equanimity
Many high-achieving, self-aware women have internalized the idea that the goal is to never wobble.
Stay centered. Stay neutral. Stay above the chaos.
They confuse this with progress.
But let me ask you:
- What if neutrality isn’t a virtue, but a coping mechanism?
- What if the attempt to stay neutral at all costs is actually a disconnection from your truth?
- And what if that disconnection is the very thing sabotaging your next breakthrough?
Equanimity isn’t bad. But it’s incomplete.
There are moments where equanimity is medicine.
- When the world is shaking.
- When chaos calls for clarity.
- When it’s not the time to wait and reflect upon things but to act ASAP
But many people use “calmness” as a disguise for emotional shutdown.
They stay neutral not because they’re truly at peace, but because they’re afraid to feel what’s really there.
Afraid that anger will burn bridges. Afraid that grief will open a flood. Afraid that joy will make them vulnerable to loss.
Here’s the paradox:
You don’t become more powerful by being less moved.
You become more powerful by knowing how to hold your inner world; without letting it run the show.
Equanimity that costs you your full expression, your authentic response, or your creative fire isn’t equanimity.
It’s energetic constriction.
And not only am I pretty sure that’s not what you came here for. You also know what happens when a dam holds too much pressure for too long:
It breaks.
So what is the goal, then?
Not stillness.
Not perfection.
Not having it all figured out.
But this:
The ability to move with what’s true to you in the moment: In your body, your energy, your voice, and your vision. Also known as:
Being authentic.
There nothing more powerful than staying true to yourself.
But hold on here! I don’t mean performing to force yourself to be authentic…
That would be contraproductive.
But staying in your full truth in the moment, wihtout feeling the pressure of changing what you feel.
To feel everything fully, without collapsing. To express what’s real, without apology. To take aligned action, even when your nervous system is buzzing.
Not neutral. Alive.
