You don’t need alignment. You need coherence.
We often hear this sentence:
“What you are going through is a lesson that life / the universe wants to teach you.”
And it is strangely reassuring. It gives meaning to pain. It gives structure to chaos. It gives direction to what hurts.
But it rests on an assumption that, when looked at closely, does not hold.
And what is interesting is not that it is false. It is why we need it so badly to be true.
1. The core of the problem: a confusion of levels
The implicit argument is this:
- The universe (or life, or the source) is all that is.
- There is nothing outside of it.
- So everything that exists is included: order, chaos, creation, destruction, love, violence, expansion, collapse.
If that is the case — and ontologically, it is — then the universe cannot at the same time be a moral instance that evaluates, corrects, teaches, or punishes.
Why?
Because morality always presupposes:
- a “better than,”
- a “should be,”
- an external point of view from which judgment is made.
But there is no outside to the whole.
To say that “the universe wants your good,” or “teaches you humility,” or “corrects you,” is to project a human structure (normative, educational, social) onto an ontological structure.
It is a category shift.
2. Why “the universe wants to teach you something” does not work logically
If the universe is:
- the source of everything,
- without an outside,
- without an opposing reference,
- without any other frame than itself,
then it cannot have a normative intention.
A normative intention presupposes comparison. Comparison presupposes a standard. A standard presupposes an external position.
And there is no external position to what contains everything.
The universe can be. It cannot moralize.
Everything else is projection.
3. Where morality actually exists (and where it does not)
Morality exists:
- in social systems,
- in biological structures,
- in cultures,
- in power dynamics,
- in survival coordination.
It serves to:
- regulate behavior,
- stabilize groups,
- prevent certain forms of chaos,
- legitimize certain structures.
It is functional. It is local. It is historical.
But it is not cosmic.
When morality is projected onto ontology, we confuse the structure of reality with the structure of society.
And that is exactly what many spiritual narratives do: they elevate human preferences to the level of universal law.
4. The precise point where the idea of “lesson” collapses
When someone says:
“Life teaches you humility.”
what they are really saying is:
- humility is ontologically better than pride,
- certain human qualities are preferred by reality itself,
- reality has a moral direction.
But pride exists. Dominance exists. Expansion exists. Destruction exists.
And they do not exist as errors, but as integral parts of the whole.
Reality does not correct them. It contains them.
5. Why we still need to believe these narratives
Because they are psychologically extremely useful:
- they make suffering intelligible,
- they give an illusion of control (“if I do it right, it will go well”),
- they justify certain inequalities,
- they make chaos morally acceptable,
- they turn pain into merit.
They are useful.
But usefulness is not truth. And it crumbles when you are moraly acceptable and still „feel punished“ by life.
Of course you could dive deep into: „rewards and punishments“ are coming with a delay.
The real question in this case is: Following which criteria and timing and what exactly for?
6. An ontologically clean alternative
Instead of:
“The universe wants to teach you something” we can say:
“Complex systems generate tension, and tension produces change.”
Instead of:
“You were too broken to learn” we can say:
“A structure was not sustainable under certain conditions.”
Instead of:
“Humility was the lesson” we can say:
“A boundary experience changed your perception of yourself.”
No will. No morality. No punishment. No reward.
Just dynamics.
7. And now, the link with alignment and coherence
This is where it becomes very concrete.
We talk a lot about alignment as an inner state: a sensation, a peace, a “this feels right.”
But you can be perfectly aligned and remain stuck.
Why?
Because alignment is a sensation. Coherence is an architecture.
You can feel aligned… and continue to reproduce the same loops.
Because your identity, your decisions, your rhythm, your environment, and your relationships are not organized according to the same logic.
I will be even so bold as to say that in most people there is a huge, tremendous gap between their ideal identity, decisions, rhythm, environment, and relationships and their actual reality.
Generally, the more sensitive you are, the more it will feel like an itchy back label on your skin.
So your system contradicts itself.
And every internal contradiction creates friction.
What you call:
- fatigue,
- blur,
- plateau,
- loss of momentum,
- the feeling of going in circles,
is often not an existential problem.
It is a structural problem.
8. The price of this clarity
When we abandon moral projections onto reality:
- comfort disappears,
- guilt disappears,
- cosmic justification disappears.
What remains is:
- responsibility,
- lucidity,
- freedom,
- sometimes tragedy,
- and the dignity of an adult gaze on what is.
It is not always comfortable. But it is often clean. liberating and euphoric.
9. One sentence to summarize
A universe that is everything cannot be the judge of parts of itself. That is ontologically incoherent. And that is why so many spiritual narratives are emotionally satisfying, but logically unstable. And therefore again: Emotionally distabilizing.
If this text moves you, it is probably because you are already beyond the need for consolation. And you are in a new era of your existence.
You do not need to be told that “everything is perfect.” You need what is blurry to become legible. What contradicts itself to become visible. What blocks to be readable as a structure, not as something to correct within yourself.
Until next time,
M
